Property Overview

An Icon Forged in
Vision & Grandeur

The Bellagio opened on 15 October 1998, replacing the Dunes casino on the site of a former man-made lake. Developer Steve Wynn invested $1.6 billion — the most expensive hotel-casino ever built at the time — with one directive: to create a resort that equalled the grandeur of the great European hotel palaces, transplanted to the Nevada desert.

The property is anchored by an 8.5-acre (3.4 ha) artificial lake, home to the world-famous Fountains of Bellagio. Over 1,200 individual water jets create choreographed performances — set to classical compositions, opera, and popular music — visible from Las Vegas Boulevard and the rooms above. Shows run every 30 minutes in the afternoon and every 15 minutes from evening until midnight.

The interior centrepiece is the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, a 13,500-square-foot glass-roofed atrium maintained by a team of 140 full-time horticulturalists. Five distinct floral displays — each representing a different season or cultural theme — are installed and struck every six to eight weeks, incorporating more than 10,000 live plants per installation.

The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art brought the first rotating fine-art exhibition programme to Las Vegas in 1998. The gallery has hosted landmark exhibitions drawn from institutions including the Hermitage, MoMA, and the Smithsonian — a cultural statement that redefined what a casino could aspire to.

Architecture Note

The Bellagio's design draws on the Italian lakeside village of Bellagio on Lake Como. Its principal tower stretches 508 feet (155 m) across 36 floors, clad in cream-coloured material that references the sun-bleached facades of northern Italian lakeside architecture. The resort comprises approximately 6 million square feet of total built area.
